Japan has once again earned top honours among global travel destinations, ranking No. 1 in the “Top Countries in the World” category of the 2026 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards (U.S. edition). The recognition marks the fourth consecutive year that readers have voted Japan as the world’s leading travel destination. Japan also placed second in the U.K. edition of the awards.

The ranking underscores Japan’s enduring appeal among international travellers, including growing numbers of Canadians seeking meaningful cultural experiences, outstanding cuisine, breathtaking natural scenery, and memorable encounters with local communities. Japan continues to offer experiences that resonate with travellers looking for both discovery and authenticity.

“To be named the world’s top country by  Condé Nast Traveler readers for a fourth consecutive year is an incredible honour,” said Yuka Suzuki, Executive Director of the JNTO Canada office. “This recognition reflects the lasting impression Japan leaves on visitors through the depth and diversity of experiences available across the country.  From world-renowned cities to rural communities, each region offers its own unique character, traditions, and perspectives.  We’re especially encouraged to see continued enthusiasm from North American travellers, and we hope this inspires even more Canadians to experience not only Japan’s iconic destinations, but also the diverse regions and local communities that make every visit unique.”

As interest in Japan continues to grow, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) remains committed to promoting travel throughout the country, including lesser-known regional destinations. JNTO continues to showcase the rich diversity of Japan’s nature, culture, cuisine, and outdoor experiences while encouraging sustainable tourism that benefits local communities across the country.
