If you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting Antigua and Barbuda, you won’t be surprised at all to learn that the twin-island country has recently been officially recognized by the Wellness Tourism Association (WTA).
Even more impressively, this marks the WTA’s first recognition. Since 2019, the organization has been busy grading destinations worldwide according to a stringent nine-point metric that includes infrastructure, safety, and sustainability. Antigua and Barbuda is the first destination to satisfy all nine.
Delicious farm-to-table cuisine, grassroots and government-partnered sustainability initiatives around the islands, a diverse array of activities like hiking, kayaking, and snorkelling, and a rich ecosystem of wellness experiences and operators are just a few of the assets that have earned Antigua and Barbuda this distinguished honour. The inspiring Adopt-a-Coastline program recently made headlines for uniting several generations of Antiguans and Barbudans in a cross-island quest to keep the beaches clean and beautiful.
Barbuda – the quieter sibling of larger Antigua – is especially notable for its lush landscape and vibrant ecosystem. Coastal caves, offshore reefs, and a thriving Frigatebird sanctuary at Codrington Lagoon punctuate a long list of breathtaking natural attractions on an island world-famous for its pink sand beaches.
Speaking on the honour, Colin C. James, Chief Executive Officer of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, said, “We are immensely proud and thrilled with this recognition from the Wellness Tourism Association. Antigua and Barbuda with our pristine beaches and lush landscapes offer a unique blend of natural beauty and tranquil environments. Meeting the WTA’s criteria allows us to position Antigua and Barbuda as a premier Wellness Destination.”
