Founded by Caribbean-born illustrator and designer Solange Naomi Samuel, Naomiraye Designs is a celebration of heritage, authenticity, and storytelling. Born and raised in the fishing village of Anse-La-Raye in St. Lucia, Naomi migrated to Canada and, like many in the Diaspora, was met with the culture shock of disconnection, isolation, and the sharp sting of racism. But out of that pain, something powerful emerged.
“I started drawing as a way of reconnecting to myself,” she says. “At first it was stingrays, then iguanas, then flowers from home. I realized each piece was me reaching back to my roots.”
What began as therapy of the soul soon evolved into a bold and beautiful creative journey. Today, Naomiraye Designs is not just an apparel brand – it’s a movement rooted in purpose and pride. Through custom-designed apparel and original surface pattern fabrics, Naomi channels her Caribbean heritage into every illustration, offering designs that are raw, bold, and emotionally resonant.
One of her standout pieces, and now signature collection, is Bèl Chivé – Creole for “nice hair.” This design features a powerful image of a mother combing her daughter’s hair, symbolizing the complexity, beauty, and reclamation of Black hair. It’s not just a visual – it’s a story. It’s a protest. It’s a love letter.
Each Naomiraye piece is created with intention. Naomi sketches by hand – pen to paper – before digitizing and refining each design, ensuring the original rawness of her artwork is preserved. This meticulous process ensures that every pattern, every colour, and every stroke is filled with meaning and soul.
