Adopt-a-Coastline is the Grassroots Organization Keeping the Coast of Antigua and Barbuda Clear

The dual-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda has long been the ideal destination for visitors seeking that perfect blend of postcard-perfect beaches, unspoiled nature, unabashed luxury, and exhilarating adventure.

As is the case in many Caribbean destinations, Antigua and Barbuda’s environmental health is intertwined with that of its economy. As Antigua and Barbuda continues to welcome more visitors to its beautiful shores, they inevitably leave their mark on its beaches as non-biodegradable trash.

Adopt-a-coastline has become the first line of defence. Founded in 2009, Adopt-a-coastline has empowered Antiguans and Barbudans to take greater ownership of their environment, organizing both on- and offshore cleanups of common offenders like broken glass, plastics, and floating debris.

Through its appointment of youth stewards, Adopt-a-coastline is also imbuing the next generation of Antiguans and Barbudans with a sense of responsibility for protecting the environment of their island. These youth stewards have led tree plantings across the island and helped create sustainable fruit gardens for communities across the island.

The organization has even received a grant from the United Nations’ Global Environment Facility (GEF) for its work with women and girls, who have become leading coastal ambassadors in the region
