University of Leicester hosts ‘Diaspora: Caribbean-Leicester Conversations and Performances – with John Agard and Fabian M Thomas

Literary Leicester and Renaissance One present a special lunchtime event of poetry, conversation and liming to showcase the Caribbean culture that has helped to transform Britain. Hosted by Melanie Abrahams, acclaimed poets John Agard and fabian m thomas celebrate wordplay, crossing cultures and the art of liming (a Caribbean word meaning something along the lines of hanging out and taking in the scene).

John Agard is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. An internationally renowned Guyanese poet, playwright and writer for both adults and children, he has lived in Lewes since the late 70s. John is a recipient of the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and also BookTrust’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

A Calabash Writers Workshop Fellow, Fabian M Thomas many publications include New Thoughts, New Words, a collection of gratitude verses, affirmations and spoken word, Djembe (an illustrated children’s book) and  a chapbook of original writings by members of his performing arts collective ‘Tribe Sankofa’ entitled Tribal Elements (A Tribe Ting, Vol 1).

The event will be hosted by Melanie Abrahams FRSA HonFRSL. A founder of Renaissance One and a leading figure in the British spoken word scene, Melanie has been instigating multidisciplinary projects for 25 years, as curator, consultant, artist agent and mentor.

This event is free but booking is essential.
