Kateryna Odarchenko Publishes Article on Ukraine’s Presidential Elections Amid War in the Kennan Institute

Kateryna Odarchenko, a political consultant and partner at SIC Group Ukraine, has published a comprehensive analysis for the Kennan Institute examining the political, legal, and security challenges surrounding Ukraine’s postponed presidential elections.

In the article titled “Ukraine’s Presidential Elections Amid War: Political, Legal, and Security Challenges,” Odarchenko provides an in-depth assessment of why holding elections under current wartime conditions remains a contentious and risky proposition. According to recent polling data, 63% of Ukrainians oppose elections while martial law remains in effect, citing concerns over security threats, logistical challenges, and potential foreign interference.

Odarchenko highlights how Russia’s ongoing cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and efforts to destabilize Ukraine’s political landscape pose significant risks to any electoral process. Additionally, the displacement of nearly 7 million Ukrainians abroad and 3.7 million internally displaced persons further complicates the prospect of ensuring a fair and inclusive vote.

“Conducting elections under wartime conditions could severely compromise national security and provide Russia with new opportunities for interference. At this critical moment, Ukraine’s focus should be on preserving institutional stability and safeguarding democratic principles,” said Odarchenko.

The article also discusses the limitations of Ukraine’s current media landscape, particularly the government-managed “United News” telemarathon, and its effect on political discourse. With public trust in traditional media declining and the opposition facing significant challenges, Odarchenko warns that elections held under these conditions would lack legitimacy.
