From Farm to Fork: Meet St. Martin’s Local Egg Farmer Dean Hodge

Dean Hodge

Meeting Dean Hodge is like stepping back to the origins of farming in St. Martin. In 1970, a young boy named Dean, inspired by his father, began his journey raising laying hens in the valley of Colombier. From those early days, his love for planting and cultivation has been at the heart of his work, and the centre of his universe. He fondly remembers helping neighbours with their farming tasks, exchanging fresh eggs for milk from local dairy cows and speaks fondly about the sense of community that continues to tie all local farmers together today. Now, Dean carries on this tradition, keeping the legacy of farming in St. Martin alive with a commitment that has trickled down his family for generations.

Sustainable Egg Production in Paradise

Dean’s farm in Colombier now produces thousands of farm-fresh eggs daily, with his treasured hens roaming freely in a carefully managed open environment. The chickens, the heart of his operation, are allowed to live at their own pace, often seeking shelter in the shade during the midday Caribbean heat and happily returning to their boxes when it’s time to lay their eggs. Dean and his committed team collect eggs multiple times a day by hand, ensuring they meet all necessary regulations and stamping each egg for subsequent sale. His sustainable practices are not about mass production, but rather about restoring and fostering a harmonious
