One day, eight speakers, scores of attendees. Barbados’ growing reputation as a hub for innovation and technology was on full display at StartUp Fest 2026, held on May 5 at the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, Holetown. The event brought together a dynamic mix of local and international voices in technology, reinforcing a shared commitment to building opportunities for Barbadian talent at home.
Hosted by District 6 Technologies Inc, a Barbadian tech company connecting local talent with international opportunities, in partnership with Supernova Lab, the national research and development platform powered by GovTech Barbados, the event welcomed tech professionals, students, and aspiring innovators for a day of insight, exchange, and connection.
With speakers from as far afield as Kenya. Participants had the opportunity to engage with experts from Africa — The Mindtribe (Tech and Investment Finance) and 4th Bound (AI Solutions Development) as well as experts from London, UK, Pronounced80, who focused on Tech and Automation Development as well as the topic of Digital solutions presented by ABA Hughes of Canada. Their participation not only elevated the event’s international profile but also underscored Barbados’ growing relevance in global tech conversations.
But local experts also played center stage in the discussion including, Lily Dash who spoke on entrepreneurship and how to optimise for international markets in the era of AI. In addition to Dario Pile from the International Development Bank (IDB) and Paul Ashby, CEO of Signia Globe Bank.
The strong turnout and engagement reflected a clear appetite among Barbadians, particularly young professionals and students, to pursue careers in technology without leaving the island. In its inaugural year, StartUp Fest serves as a platform for retaining local talent, fostering skills development, and reducing brain drain by showcasing viable pathways within the regional and global tech economy.
Speaking to the ethos behind the event, Jonothan Sylvester, Co-Founder of D6 Tech explained, “Startup Fest is about shifting the narrative – showing that Barbadian talent doesn’t have to look outward for opportunity,” said Sylvester, adding, “We’re building bridges that allow our people to participate in the global tech economy conversation while staying rooted at home.”
Heralding the event as a success, Jeevan Robinson, Co-Founder of D6 Tech discussed the future of the event and the team’s next steps. “The level of engagement we saw proves that the interest is here – the talent is here. Our responsibility now is to continue creating spaces and systems that turn that interest into sustainable careers and businesses,” he noted.
