The Antigua Sailing Week (April 27 – May 3 2019 www.sailingweek.com), now in its 52nd year, offers one of the best sailing races in the Caribbean and is a must do on many a sailor’s bucket list. For 2019, the prestigious regatta kicks activities up a notch by offering fantastic experiences for fun-loving non-sailors who are keen to get in on the sailing action, without getting their feet too wet.
Lookout Viewing and Local Cuisine:
With hot racing taking place on the water, visitors can catch the excitement of the race with scenic hikes along Carpenter’s Rock, the Pillars of Hercules and the historic Shirley Heights Lookout and Restaurant; offering amazing vantage points from which to watch the race while sampling local cuisine.
Chase the Race by sea and Party:
Experience the thrill of the race up close on ‘Chase the Race’ sea excursions which allow spectators to get into the water and in the heart of the action. Chasers hop onboard a catamaran, and get right up in the race, while enjoying music, drinks and lunch on board. Take a snorkel in one of Antigua’s bays before heading back to Falmouth Harbour Marina for the daily race prize-giving and party.
Reggae in the Park at the UNESCO World Heritage site:
By night, the highlight of the week is ‘Reggae in the Park’. An international reggae concert which takes place in historic Nelson’s Dockyard where many of the competitors boats line the marina wall. 2019 is the 10th Anniversary of this now legendary event. It is a wonderful night of Caribbean entertainment in the company of an international crowd set to the backdrop of the Copper and Lumber Historic Inn and the old Officers Quarters in the UNESCO designated national park.
Lay Day Beach Party:
Raft-up and bring out your floaties for the mid-week beach party known as Lay Day at the family-friendly Pigeon Point beach. The chilled-out afternoon, which offers sailors some down-time in between races, features swimming challenges, Stand Up Paddle Board rally, tug o’ war and much more. The event starts in the morning and lasts right through to sunset and is the perfect opportunity to party with crews at a classic Caribbean beach day.
Daily Bar-hopping and Parties:
The popular sailing community of English Harbour will be buzzing each night with more than 25 rustic bars and restaurants open along with street-side vendors serving up cold drinks, hot dinners and live music. Explore a different bar or restaurant each night with your crew.
