Imagined and produced by a collective of local artists and cultural presenters who have joined together to host a multi-day festival of music, food, and art. This year Mixto Festival brings old school flavour to the internet! The weekend-long event highlights Toronto's “mixed” nature through regional and international programming.          

WHAT:  A three-day online festival bringing together diverse local music and bridging communities, cultures and contemporary intercultural experiences with live performances, djs, zoom party, workshops, and  discussion. All delivered online for free!

WHERE: Live streamed from Toronto to the world via www.mixtofestival.com, and live to air on CIUT 89.5FM

WHEN: Friday November 27thSaturday November 28th, and Sunday November 29th, 2020

Live performances by:

Witch Prophet - Toronto based, Polaris short-listed, Ethiopian/Eritrean singer-songwriter Ayo Leilani, blending hip-hop, jazz and soul-inspired beats.

Bruno Capinan - Prolific Brazilian-Canadian singer/songwriter will be releasing his fifth album as part of the festival, recorded entirely during COVID-19 lockdown.

Aline Morales - Community favourite, Juno nominated Brazilan vocalist and percussionist performing unreleased material from her highly anticipated forthcoming album.

Up North Reggae Jam: Toronto’s legendary reggae backing band for the heaviest touring artists, Hardcore, with featured performances by some of the best vocalists in the city:                

Steele - This multiple Juno nominated Reggae-Soul artist has performed at top reggae festival around the world

Tasha T - Boundary pushing artiste with “Sing-Jay” style has captivated audiences across Canada, UK and Jamaica

Eyesus

- Voted as Toronto’s Top Dancehall artists he was nominated for a 2018 Juno for the single, 'Neva Judge'.

Alicia Cinnamon - Bold young vocalist has received strong CBC airplay for her songs that tackle social injustice.

DJ performances by::

Bianca Maieli -DJ and Producer born and raised in Los Angeles and heavily influenced by the diverse music of the city as well as her mixed South Indian and Caribbean Colombian roots.

me time - Infectious and genre mashing Toronto based DJ who’s known to ignite dancefloors. With a 10-year acting career under her belt (yes, she’s that girl from Degrassi), she’s a seasoned performer who brings electricity to every stage she graces.

Sofia Fly - Trans DJ, producer, and rapper who plays everything from house, Latin, trap, to pop. Her fiery sets focus heavily on LGBTQ and women artists channelling inspiration from both her Latin roots and her Toronto upbringing.

Win - Toronto’s DJ Win weaves together a unique mix of deep world, downtempo electronica, and deep house, inspired by the rhythms of the globe, she blends cross-continental grooves that will move you on a magical sound journey.

Raf Reza - Toronto based genre-fluid DJ known for his quirky, danceable sets.

General Eclectic - Uma Nota co-founder and long time Toronto danceloor staple playing interesting and unique selections, whether brand new digital bangers or a rare piece of vintage vinyl.

Higher Heights Selectors - All-vinyl, reggae dub-wise soundsystem selector duo.

Workshops by:

Fly Lady Di - Multi-disciplinary artist, performer, dancer and dj Diana Reyes teaching a Saturday morning dance class.

Ruben Esguerra - An educational ‘work-show’ from Jane and Finch by way of Colombia. Ruben ‘Beny’ Esguerra is a Juno nominated multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, arts educator and community worker who is also PhD (ABD) candidate in Musicology/Ethnomusicology specializing in traditional and urban music.‚Ä®

Derek Thorne - An interactive percussion workshop by Trinidad and Tobago born and raised percussionist.

Hosted by: Tamar Ilana - Back for her second year as community host, the talented globe-trotting singer, dancer, and storyteller.

Intercultural discussion moderated by Metis art curator Rheanne Chartrand

Presented and produced by Uma Nota Culture with financial support from the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Toronto Arts Council. Additional partners include Lula Music and Arts CentreThe Tawoos Initiative, and CIUT FM 89.5.

ABOUT UMA NOTA CULTURE:

Founded in 2007, Uma Nota (UNC) has hosted over 80 events in 13 years, including concerts, festivals, block parties, film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops, and is a reference point for world citizens and lovers of music and culture. Mixto is scaled up from similar festivals dating back to 2012, always community focused and hosted in traditionally bohemian neighbourhoods like Kensington Market, Dundas West, and other areas in the West of Toronto. Mixto 2019 was an afternoon and night of live performances by bands, DJs and site animators, the event was attended by over 1200 intergenerational, diverse guests.

Mixto Festival’s four core team members are veterans of Toronto’s events, arts and culture sector and are producers and alumni from Harbourfront Centre, Lula Lounge and Lulaworld festival, Terroir, Wayhome, City of Brampton and Dundas West Fest.
