The Government of Montserrat is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for the post of Guidance Counsellor, within the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports in Montserrat.

JOB PURPOSE

To deliver Guidance Counselling/Personal, Moral and Social Education services to secondary school students and support parents/guardians with youth psychosocial development. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide appropriate Personal, Moral and Social Education (PMSE) counselling to groups of students and individuals.
  • Provide leadership in consultation with the Principal, under the supervision of the Education Psychologist for the school’s guidance programme and in accordance with goals and objectives developed cooperatively.
  • Work with the Education Psychologist to facilitate professional development in Guidance and Counselling at the school level.
  • Work with the Education Psychologist to evaluate the Guidance and Counselling programme at the Secondary School.
  • Provide individual and group activities in Career Education, Personal, Moral and Social Education (PSME) counselling and the coordination of appropriate resources and services.
  • Assist in developing profiles of students (aptitudes, achievement, interests) and provide feedback on the curriculum needs of students where appropriate.
  • Assist teachers to incorporate Guidance Counselling/PSME objectives in the regular curriculum.
  • Liaise with persons and agencies outside the school and within the home on Guidance Counselling/PSME matters.
  • Maintain links with feeder schools and post-secondary institutions regarding transition.
  • Assist in providing information to teachers regarding the socio-emotional needs of children.
  • Develop and maintain awareness of referral resources in the community.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Counselling or related field from a recognized University.  
  • Have at least five (5) years experience in providing Counselling Services within a professional setting.
  • Demonstrate personal qualities of understanding others, trust, empathy, maturity, conscientiousness, integrity and initiative.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Counselling or a related field would be an asset.
  • Professional Teacher Training and or Teacher Training Certification is desirable.
  • The ability to communicate in Spanish would also be useful.
