Most of us ought to be aware of Hurricane Irma which was formed in the Atlantic during the past week and is projected to be a category 4 Hurricane.

Whilst a definite path is still to be determined the experts have stated that there is a chance of Irma affecting the Leeward Islands. Considering the unpredictable nature of hurricanes, it is always wise for us to be prepared.

Over the past two years we have made preparations for storms that never materialized and some even felt that we over prepared. However, we all should know that it is better to be over prepared than to be under prepared. Also each time we thoroughly prepare the less effort it will take and the better prepared we would be the next time around.

I also report that our National Disaster Preparedness and Response Advisory Committee (NDPRAC) met on Friday past and the Disaster Management Coordinating Agency (DMCA) has been given directives to ensure that all hurricane preparations are in place.

We have experienced hurricanes in the past so we know that they can cause floods, rough seas, landslides, power outages and more. Therefore, I must encourage everyone not to wait until the last minute to prepare and that in times like these we must become our brother’s keeper.

I urge all residents to stay tuned to ZJB radio for updates on the weather and for instructions and information on Access, Schools, shelters and any other information which may be deemed essential.

While we pray, let us get prepared and may God Bless us all.
