Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada, a day for all Canadians to celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures, and achievements of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

“In acknowledgement of National Indigenous Peoples Day, Skills Ontario recognizes the importance of celebrating the identities and achievements of Indigenous peoples,” says Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario. “We are pleased to continue to present opportunities through our First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Initiatives for Indigenous youth to explore the many rewarding pathways in the skilled trades and technologies. We look forward to offering even more opportunities and learning experiences in the future.”

“As a Métis woman, I know firsthand the importance of representation in the work that Skills Ontario does,” says Brittany Raymond, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Initiatives Program Manager at Skills Ontario. “I am proud that we are able to celebrate the successes, skills, and achievements of Indigenous peoples year-round, and especially during National Indigenous Peoples Day.”

Skills Ontario delivers programming to Indigenous youth through support from the government of Ontario, Algoma Workforce Investment Corporation, Bruce Power, CBRE, Enbridge, Grand River Employment & Training, Hydro One, North Shore Tribal Council, Bruce-Grey Catholic DSB, Rainbow DSB, Fanshawe College, TC Energy, Cambrian College, WSPS, and Ontario Power Generation. The 2023 First Nations. Métis, and Inuit Student Conference will take place with sponsorship from Pomerleau.

Skills Ontario’s First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Initiatives engage industry and college partners, small businesses, school boards, and students to connect education, experience, and employment. Skills Ontario offers programs to schools, Friendship Centres, and Band Offices. Through career exploration events, hands-on challenges, and mentoring opportunities, Skills Ontario aims to deliver meaningful, culturally relevant programming.
