Have you ever thought after a massage session, "I could use a couple more minutes!" So how do you know how long a massage should last?

There are general recommended session lengths for different types of massage:

  • Massage for medical indications, depending on the disease - from 20 to 90 minutes
  • Massage in the process of rehabilitation and recovery (after injury or illness) - from 60 to 90 minutes
  • Revitalizing and relaxing massage - from 30 to 120 minutes
  • Body shaping massage - from 45 to 90 minutes

Why the length of the session?

Massage is divided into different stages. If we are talking about classic massage: general massage, back massage, cervical-collar massage.

In good massage salons like Armonia SPA, where they care about the quality of services and work professionals, the division into stages is as follows:

  • The first stage - preparatory, it includes stroking, preparing the muscles for the main part of the massage and activating blood flow to the surrounding tissues. This is a mandatory stage to prevent injuries during the massage. It is also the stage where the massage therapist gets to know your body to understand how it reacts to the massage. At this stage, you may be asked questions regarding your skin sensitivity and pain threshold.
  • After this, the massage moves into the active stage, which is traditionally identified with the massage itself. Various kneading, rubbing, squeezing movements that increase tissue mobility, relieve muscle tension and improve blood and lymph flow. The duration of the second stage depends on how much the muscles are tense and overloaded.
  • The final stage is the final stage, during which gentler and smoother movements are used to relax the muscles. This stage involves light, smooth muscle work with various techniques. At this stage you should feel lightness in your body and peace. Many people fall asleep at this stage, and this is normal.

There are types of massage that involve other stages of execution. For example, sports massage. Since sports massage most often focuses on a specific muscle group or even one specific muscle, the time can vary greatly. If only one muscle is being worked on, the massage can last as long as 30 minutes. It all depends on your wishes.

How often should I get a massage?

Besides the duration of the session, the second most common question clients ask is: "How often should I get a massage?". This is a very interesting question, but it doesn't have a one-size-fits-all answer. There are many factors that go into determining how often you should get a massage.

There are 3 basic questions you need to ask yourself:

  1. Why am I coming in for a massage?
  2. Can I free up my schedule?
  3. What is my budget?

There are many reasons why a person decides to go for a massage. Most people come in when they are in pain about something. If you go to massage therapists because of pain, there are additional questions that need to be answered. Have you suffered an injury, or is the pain due to improper sleep posture; overexertion, bad habits, or stress?

Talk to your massage therapist beforehand and explain your circumstances to get a better idea of the timing of treatment.

Listen to your body

We recommend listening to how you feel. Everyone is different: some people need more and some need less time to relax, work the muscles and maximize the effect. Many massage therapists believe that the ideal time to relax and work the muscles is 60-90 minutes, and sometimes longer, especially for people who come to massage for the first time or after a long break. Usually 60 minutes is enough time to work out your entire body, especially if you have regular massages.

Some experts believe that massage has an accumulative effect, so it is possible to do 30-45 minutes, but over a longer period of time. We recommend trying both approaches, listening to yourself and choosing what suits you best. Massage is an important part of keeping you healthy and in good spirits. After a massage session, you will be refreshed, rested and rejuvenated; you will be energized for new accomplishments.
