Secretary-General Rodney Taylor met with Senator, the Hon. Hassel Bacchus, Minister of Digital Transformation on Friday 3rd December, 2021. Discussions were held in the context of the establishment of a new Ministry in July 2021 with responsibility for Digital Transformation.

Secretary-General Taylor briefed Minister Bacchus and his team on the ways in which the CTU could assist Trinidad and Tobago advance its plans to become a Digital Nation; an objective that is closely aligned to the CTU’s 21st Century Government initiative. Minister Bacchus, in welcoming the offer of support, emphasised the importance of collaboration at the regional level including the key role that the regional harmonisation of standards and policies in the successful establishment of a Single ICT Space within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy. Digital IDs, a key undertaking of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, was identified as another area in which the CTU could provide guidance. The Secretary General noted that Trinidad and Tobago’s work on e-IDs could serve as the basis for greater regional cooperation and interoperability in this area.

The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is a founding member of the CTU and has hosted the CTU Headquarters in Port of Spain since 1990. A strong supporter of the Union, Trinidad and Tobago has collaborated with the organisation in a number of key projects and activities over the years; and such collaboration is expected to continue. In 2021, the CTU is lending its technical assistance through the provision of Advisory Services on the Modernisation of the Legal Framework for Electronic Transactions in Trinidad and Tobago.

Secretary-General Taylor was accompanied by his team, which comprised of Trevor Prevatt, Director Stakeholder Engagement Unit, Junior Mc Intyre, Director Research and Analysis Unit and Shanea Lewis, Coordinator in the Office of the Secretary General.
