Congratulations to Dr. Graham Ryan on his appointment to the post of Director of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO).

The news was delivered today by the MVO, as Dr Ryan becomes the first national of Montserrat to hold the position. He has maintained a strong relationship with the MVO since he first worked there as an intern in 1996.

Dr. Ryan holds a PhD in Volcanology from The University of Lancaster, U.K. and an MPhys Physics with Technological Physics from the University of Manchester. He has held research fellowships in volcano and geothermal physics in Trinidad and New Zealand as well as the post of Volcanologist at the MVO.

Immediately prior to his return to the MVO in this capacity, Dr. Ryan was tasked with volcanic deformation monitoring of 13 volcanoes across seven islands of The Lesser Antilles, supervising staff and students working on volcano monitoring and geothermal projects, and regional assistance with geothermal development and exploration in addition to other duties.

His pragmatic approach to research focuses on using available tools most likely to yield useful answers. This approach, coupled with his project management experience, professional development in Caribbean disaster risk management and previous stints as Acting Director of both the MVO and SRC in Trinidad bode well for the continued work of the MVO, locally and further afield.
