Washington, DC — Early Wednesday morning, while votes continue to be counted, President Trump falsely claimed that the election was being stolen from him and called on the Supreme Court to intervene and potentially halt the counting of ballots. Also this morning, the president tweeted that counting ballots amounted to fraud and amplified a conspiracy theory about the election. The following is a statement from Muslim Advocates Executive Director Farhana Khera:

“Even before Election Day, President Trump openly discussed his intention to prevent votes from being counted and undermine the election. Today, he put that plan into action. Despite a deadly pandemic and ruthless attempts in multiple states to keep people from voting, Americans of all backgrounds across the nation turned out in record numbers to vote. Instead of honoring that inspiring achievement, President Trump is trying to silence the will of the voters and prevent ballots from being counted.

The American people must decide this election, not President Trump and his lawyers. There are tens of millions of votes left to count, and local officials are working to honor each and every one. Our democratic process is working. Now, we must ensure that it keeps working by ignoring the noise, counting every ballot and honoring the voice of the people.”
