University of Soca is a name that will be rolling off the lips of Caribbean people around the world from this summer onwards, as this talented group of musicians prepare to launch their first single from their soon to be released self titled album, any day now.
The band is by no means an entirely new entity, as they originally came together in 2010. However, they have spent their time perfecting their art, performing with international bands such as Third World, Burning Flames and others. Now, they are ready to let the world hear just what they are capable of as a solo act.
MNI Alive had an exclusive listen to some of the tracks set to be featured on the soon to be released 2012 album and without any hesitation, we can tell you that it will be an album to create musical shockwaves within the Soca music fraternity.
University of Soca (UOS) is a band that is comprised of musicians originally form the Caribbean island of Montserrat but currently reside in New York & Boston. The group’s name was inspired from the late Soca King of The World, Alphonsus ‘Arrow’ Cassell. The members made a vow during Arrow’s illness that they would form a collective of all their individual talents to ensure that the legacy of Arrow lives on, and Montserrat remains synonymous with producing Soca music of quality and international appeal. The name University of Soca was only fitting as this is the name Arrow and his brother Hero named their creative grouping in the early years when they made hit song after hit song for Arrow’s annual album releases.
Montserrat's 50th Anniversary of Festival will take place this December and the University of Soca are getting set for this momentous occasion by catering first to the United Kingdom audience with an event carded for Friday, August 3rd, 2012. Following this event, the band travels to the midlands to perform at Leicester's Carnival on August 4th.
It will be in the UK, that the new single, entitled 'Wuk', will get its first live performance. The single was produced by Dmitri Tuitt, also known as “DJ Tula” of 501 Productions, Montserrat, with additional bassline played by Roland “Strokes” Richards for UOS. Lyrics of Wuk were written by Reinford "Kulcha Don' Gibbons for UOS, with Kulcha Don and Soca Deva, Jadine on vocals. Recording for the single was done at Alienz Studios, Stamford CT, with mixing conducted by Carol Hodge of OSHA Recordinng Studios, Brooklyn NY. University of Soca is managed by New York based management company, VICRAE INC.
UOS is scheduled to make appearances in Boston, Toronto, New York and Miami. They are currently recording their full self-titled debut album scheduled to be released in September, 2012.
