Montserrat on Friday hosted a four-person delegation from the Regional Council of Guadeloupe, who are looking at ways to develop closer collaboration with Montserrat and other nations in the Caribbean.
The delegation is presently conducting missions to several islands, including the British Virgin Islands and Montserrat. The council is mandated by the European Union to manage a 60 million Euro funded programme called INTERREG IV ‘Caraibes’ and is looking for ways to engage other Caribbean countries in various sectors, including culture, health, environment and renewable energies.
According to Beverly Mendes, permanent secretary in the Office of the Premier, the objectives of the mission are:
(1) To provide an in-country forum for Guadeloupe and Montserrat to discuss and decide on broad areas of collaboration for each country’s mutual benefit and development; and
(2) To discuss Guadeloupe’s intention of becoming associate members of OECS and CARICOM and ways in which Guadeloupe can cooperate in that regard, while learning from Montserrat of their experience of its membership status within these entities.
During the day the delegation made courtesy calls on Governor Adrian Davis, Premier Reuben Meade; and spoke with senior officials from the government on matters relating to education, health, agriculture, culture, air and sea travel, and disaster response.
